It will protect your lower back by reducing the pressure on the spine if, for example you are carrying something heavy. They cannot totally eliminate the risk of spraining or straining the muscles and ligaments in your back, but they do afford you some protection. Be sensible when it comes to lifting. Ask for help when you need it. Don’t try to lift something heavy on your own.

You can wear the back belt while you are sleeping, as sometimes people sleep in awkward positions and wake up with very painful lumbar regions.

Manual handling jobs

If you have a job that involves manual handling, you should have undergone training in how to lift, push and pull safely. If you did not and have such training, your employer is at fault. You can complain to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), but it won’t help you in the short term while you are nursing your painful back. Complaining should, however, help prevent the mistake being repeated. Your colleagues will benefit from the fact that you complained, as long as management act to rectify the situation. If they don’t, they should be reported to the HSE. You can’t be sacked for reporting to them.
